Final Flames: Dark Rage is a side-scrolling beat 'em up game heavily inspired by Final Fight and Streets of Rage. In this game, four young boys enjoy their everyday school life. One day, a teacher was attacked by mysterious dark beings. The danger does not stop there. An army of them began attacking the entire school. The four boys must then defend their school. They, however, found out that it was not only their school under attack; their entire land was being destroyed. It is up to these four boys to find where these dark creatures are coming from and banish them from their land once and for all. You can pick any of the four boys to clear out all of the enemies of a stage and defeat each boss. Not only a second player can join and help out on your adventure as well, but there are innocent civilians you meet along the way who can fight as well. Protect your home!

Good ol' times. Finally finished. Can't believe people enjoyed this game. *tear* life's good even though I hated making the backgrounds lol

"Back then when we were developing this game, we basically treated this as our child. We had high hopes for it that many people would actually play it. We even claimed that it would be the best game ever. But of course, any child could say that. It's true that there were many flaws within this game that we alleviated in the second game but there is something this game has that the second game doesn't have: our heart and teamwork reflected in the finished product. And that is why this is still one of the projects I'm proudest about. It's quite sad to see our motivation for developing together go down the drain after this was completed."

Interesting Development Facts

  • The project was started by Mr. Prez when he was in fifth grade and finished the game when he was ninth grade. This was due to the fact that the file was lost 3 times and had to be started over from the beginning.
  • The game was initially titled Lovers' Rose but was changed because the team did not want anyone thinking it was a dating game. The reasoning for the first title was about having the game's name to feel fantasy-like. In the end, it really sounded like a dating game.
  • The game was first design to be a game similar to Four Swords after the Prez and Chair were playing it.
  • The game initially had every character with swords. King had the heavy sword, so he was strong but slow. Joriel had the short sword, so he had average stats. Faliyos had dual swords, so he was weak but fast. Alen had the wooden sword so he was intended to be an extra joke character.
  • Final Flames: Dark Rage's name combines FINAL Fight and Streets of RAGE, which are games it was based off of.
  • The first assistant, Dennis, always misses the first hit of his combo. This was because after moving the game from Game Maker 7 to Game Maker 8, the hit detection became corrupted and every logical fix did not seem to work. Dennis went from a decent assistant to the worst assistant in the game.
  • The game was going to have an extra stage featuring the heroes as adults and a new character to introduce the sequel but was scrapped due to time constraints. The new character's portrait was still in the files but was never used. She appears as a fully playable character in the sequel as Naira.
  • Mr. Prez made an alternate demo version featuring Alen as an Alien.
  • Jesson and Frenzy are the only bosses whose sprites are original. The rest of the enemies are taken from fighting games.
  • Joriel's design was based heavily off of Terry Bogard.
  • The first assistant, Dennis, was loosely based off of Momo Karuizawa from Project Justice.
  • The second assistant, Melody, was based off of Sonia Strumm from Megaman Starforce.
  • The third assistant, Striker, was inspired by the baseball bat from Super Smash Bros.
  • The fifth assistant, Robin, returns as a final boss in the alternate universe of Harvest: Gun Lazor of Joriel. He still retains his rock throwing habits but became obese.
  • The final boss, Chaos, is often thought to be Vegeta due to the sillhoute. His sprites were actually from evil Danny Phantom.
  • The first four assistants' moves were supposed to be parallel to each of the main characters' moves. Dennis's two hit combo and tennis projectile parallels King's two hit combo and fireball projectile. Melody's musical note projectiles and paralyzing rays parallels Joriel's arrows and paralyzing camera shot. Striker's one hit KO and counter parallels Faliyos's one hit KO and counter. Lace's three hit combo and dash attack parallels Alen's five hit combo and flying kick.
  • Death animations came from various video games. King's death reflects the classic Megaman death. Joriel's death reflects Mario's death. Faliyos's death reflects Link's death in Link to the Past. Alen's death reflects the old Runescape death.
  • The first background made for the game was done from scratch. Afterwards, everyone got lazy and just modified backgrounds from AHHH! Real Monsters! The team wanted to make the backgrounds original again and so they did. Team got lazy again so we took a video of a roadtrip and painted over certain frames to use as backgrounds.
  • Faliyos's old walking animation only had his legs move. It looks like the old Mortal Kombat walking animation.
  • During the Beat 'em up reboot of the game, King had slash projectiles and no combo followup. The slash projectile was later changed as a skill of the fifth boss, Frenzy.
  • The game had many stupid short comics made during the development, but was shared only among the team

Everyone hated making backgrounds so testing the stage was harder because testers thought they were going in circles with this dull blue background everywhere

Title screen of the Beat 'em up reboot was made of recovery items called energy orbs, which later was changed into food
