A New Year Already? Where have we been!?

Phew! This Devlog is extremely outdated! What a mess! Sure we have been updated elsewhere, but I never actually get to log anything here throughout the whole semester. Anyways, this is Chair, and let's begin with some unfortunate news. Lots of things happened since the previous post.

Mr. Prez is no longer part of Lame Dimension

The man who leads everything Lame Dimension is no longer part of the team. This is really depressing because he's the one who started everything, and now he just left what he had created. I respect his decision though, and it's partially my fault that led him into making this decision. It's some personal matters, but I do not think it should be discussed here. In conclusion, Mr. Prez has given the leadership role to me, because there's literally nobody else left in this team. As 2017 begins, Lame Dimension will be a one man army. If Mr. Prez ever decides to come back, I will welcome him with open arms. He's very special to me, but sometimes, people gotta part paths. Mr. Prez will still be developing games but it will be apart from Lame Dimension. Well, let's go smoke weed. (I don't smoke though lol)

New Game Released! It's The Nutshack!

Actually, this game has been released since November! This was actually intended as a 24 hour project for Extra Life. Extra Life is a charity event in which people can play games for over 24 hours and get donations to their local hospital. This year, I decided to develop a game instead! At the end of 24 hours, however, only the bosses were completed. I extended the project to a week, and the game was complete with four stages. What really impressed me though is that I'm actually getting downloads for once. But more than that, there's a small speedrunning community for this game! It's pretty cool that some people actually dedicated their time into this. I feel like this is a meme game that went above and beyond the meme game standards. But that might be just me. There's most likely tons of other meme games better than this. I'm just somewhat proud of this Megaman X clone I made. In addition to that, the creator of the Nutshack and the rapper of the theme song even made a Tweet about this game and how they thought it was cool. I could talk on forever about this game but let's move forward. I think this meme game is what finally pushed Lame Dimension's existence to the Internet. Some people actually now know that Lame Dimension exists.

Final Flames 2 is almost complete!

Picture
We've said it so many times over and over again. But this time, it's certain! We had enough debugging sessions for this game. We tested this enough. We're about to close the development for this. Every stage on the game is complete. We're just missing so many things, graphic-wise. So do please stay put. This is quite a decent game put together in my opinion. Definitely not a great game to a higher standard of Beat em ups, but I genuinely enjoy this game. Because the game's development has been going on for so long, I'm currently debating whether or not to still continue to extra ending arc. It's a really nice way to conclude the story of this game though. I know the story is not the main point of the game, but I think having some back story might make the game more interesting. Naira best girl.

Wave Shine's development will start soon!

Picture
I finally got the guts to begin this game! The only thing left that's preventing me from starting is Final Flames 2. What's different about this game is that I'm actually willing to throw in money to hire people. I want to make this a legit game. I think this game has potential and I won't let this go to waste with my crappy skills in other areas other than programming. I'm currently working very hard to accumulate some funds in order to get some talented people on board. Wave Shine will now be a collaboration with another small game development team. I agreed to help them with the mobile game they are currently making because they said they will fund Wave Shine and help develop it if I contribute to their project. I genuinely cannot wait to begin this game! It's long, and difficult, but I'm ready.

Global Game Jam 2017

Yup! I'll be attending my first game jam at San Jose! I can't wait to see how others develop their game. I'm really taking game development seriously now so I need to know how other people do it. I'm only a small fry in the game development community so I think participating will help me out! I'll definitely leave a link in this site to whatever game I develop with others on that event.

Updates, Updates, Updates! Final Flames 2 Demo v0.2.0, Wave Shine!, and new website stuff

Hi, this is Chair. After disappearing for a bit to attend random events such as Anime Expo and Evolution Chamionship Series, I decided to get back to working on the games. But before we head to those, let's talk about a new addition to the website, which is the Developer's Voice. I thought that this website needed more personality and I thought that it would obtain that personality if the developers could add their honest thoughts and feelings about each game they made.

Final Flames 2

First of all, here's a change log to the Demo v0.2.0 of Final Flames 2:
  • ADDED A PAUSE FEATURE! WOW! We really needed that! More importantly, this pause menu has a character switching system, which allows you to switch characters whenever you want. In addition to this, the lives system was omitted. You are able to collect Reviving items throughout the game. This means that the game is over when all of your characters are dead.
  • Slight changes to graphics. Smoother transitions between stages. New portraits for characters. Small animation updates. Every cutscene has scrolling text now. Better backgrounds.
  • Slight changes to sound. Most notable is that we abandoned MIDI format for background music
  • Many bug fixes. We believe that this game can now be played in Windows 8. There's a better chance that it will work. The slowdown at the title screen no longer exists for weaker computers. Enemies will no longer walk on the air. Lots of other junk has been fixed.
  • Added D-pad functionality. This is so that the game is compatible with all Xinput controllers and not just the Xbox 360 controller.

This is most likely the last update for the demo. Everything else will be in the full game unless I have another urge to fix something. Early in development, there was planned to be an extra stage. Well, that's scrapped for something else bigger. A hidden pseudo RPG Maker horror portion that extends the game's silly plot into something else.

Wave Shine!

Picture

Wave Shine! is the new title for FGC Simulator. Why? First of all, the game utilizes a feature from Smash Bros. Melee called Waveshining. It's done by using the reflector's one frame hitbox and following up with a powerful attack. A similar function would be present in the game, which allows you to have better mobility and combo potential. Second, think about how waves shine in the sun. However, that can be transcient, as the waves disappear as they travel further into the shore. This reflects the feeling of the game as happiness fades away as the game progresses. Well, that's really it. I haven't done anything with this game. Legit, I just need to finish Final Flames 2.
Finally, Mr. Prez, since you actually put updates in the website, I have a feeling that you're actually reading this. if you are, please stop blocking communication between us. I'm genuinely concerned now and this is really not making anything better.

Final Flames 2 is actually...good!?!?

So I actually had the opportunity for the first time to have the Final Flames 2 Demo to be on a table for people to play in an anime convention. I even held a speedrun challenge of the game there, in which the winner wins a free scouter from Dragon Ball Z. What surprised me is that the winner got a faster time than me, in which he and his friend beat the demo in 4 minutes 38 seconds. That's pretty fast honestly. Seeing that, I still don't know how some people find this game a little difficult. Even one of our best Super Smash Bros Melee players had a game over.

But what surprised me the most is that a lot of people that played the game told me that this game was really fun! I was really nervous about showing this game too and it made me really glad that even those who had a hard time found it enjoyable. There were even people playing this game multiple times and seeing that made me smile. I also had a sheet in which people who are interested in this game can list down their email. I was really happy that some people actually listed down their email.
Picture
A doodle of Naira, one of Final Flames 2's characters, on the feedback sheet. The Japanese translates to "awesome af".
It's not going to be over yet though. I actually have another opportunity to have this game tabled at an upcoming gaming event. I even fixed some of the bugs found by some people in the anime convention. I can't wait!

Final Flames 2 is also going to have a kickstarter soon so that I will be able to buy assets for the game. I mean, I can't just really distribute this game with all of these game sound rips. Haha.

We also FINALLY GOT AN ARTIST. I mean, I actually took a bit of time to learn how to draw but I actually now have someone to concentrate on the sprites. This also means awesome promotional art for the Kickstarter video.

Since we got good feedback on this game, I have uploaded Final Flames 2 on a couple of indie game websites, such as Itch.io and Game Jolt. Sadly, I haven't really been getting any uploads yet but I'm still determined! I have taken down the links to the Google Drive downloads for Final Flames 2 and replaced them for those indie websites because it's easier for me to keep track of who's checking them out.

I think this is finally going to be the time when Lame Dimension can show off how cool we are!

Lastly, I think I have decided a final name for FGC Simulator. I recently thought that adding waveshines to all of the characters can add some awesome combo potential for the game. And that's when it hit me. FGC Simulator is now called Wave Shine. I think it's also a good name, not just to tie in with the fighting game community but also to the story. You see, waves can be big and shining far out in the ocean. But once they reach the shore, they will crash and disappear.

How does this tie in with the story? Whelp, we'll find out soon what happens in our sad story once it's out!

Final Flames 1 Demo (2010)
Final Flames 2 Demo (2016)
Hey! Chair here! You know, I've waited for so many years just for some big update on Final Flames 2.  Well, we've to a point where it finally has a demo! I could talk about this endlessly, but I actually rushed this super duper hard! In fact, I actually need to head out to a tournament soon. I just wanted to get this demo done before I leave haha! But hey! I think it's still a good build! Anyways, gotta get on that 10 hour drive hype! Please do check it out!

One of things I'm really amazed about is just seeing the Final Flames 1 Demo and the Final Flames 2 Demo next to each other. It really shows me how much we've improved over time.

Hardware Upgrade Hype leads to Updates!

Yes, this is just another AYAimouto update by Chair. I forked out about $200 to upgrade the S-AYA computer because it was too friggin slow and it makes me very lazy to program on the main computer and migrate everything to the S-AYA computer. So now, S-AYA is now S-AYA+. She's still subpar but she's definitely way better than the previous incarnation. This is probably the best budget build I've ever done. But it's not just S-AYA who had an upgrade. Our worst computer, BROCK, is now BROCKS.

Not just one computer changed but two!?

Picture
BROCK, which stands for Broken Rapist on Computer Krap, was a computer that runs Slitaz on a friggin CD because when I bought that piece of junk, it couldn't even install any OS later than Windows 98 Second Edition. I barely used that computer and when I got annoyed by constantly moving Aya's code from the main computer to the S-AYA computer, I had an idea to convert BROCK into a file server. Basically, the S in BROCKS means server. We used FreeNAS OS for this. Also, you have no idea how bad this computer is. Like its RAM (which is like 216 MB) is something even older than DDR1 so I couldn't even migrate S-AYA's old RAM into it. Also, the 20GB harddrive got friggin corrupt after installing the OS so I had to sacrifice S-AYA's 60GB harddrive as storage for the OS, because the computer can't detect USB drives at startup. Basically, the server's file storage runs on a $10 16GB USB Flashdrive I bought at the cash register. Don't wanna fork money for an external HDD mang. Also, the FreeNAS OS we installed had to be a SUPER OLD VERSION. Why? Because the current version, which is 9.3 at this time, needs like 8GB of RAM. This computer only had about 200MB. So we had to find an old one to support low RAM. We got version 0.7, and it's still demands 512 MB. We got it to work though haha. Anyways, we got the 16GB file server up. But even though I can move Aya's files easier and work faster with the apartment development team, I really still just wanted to work on the code directly on the S-AYA computer, but I couldn't due to the hardware limitations preventing me to do so. Everything also loads SUPER SLOW so testing it there sucked. And here comes the decision to make a budget upgrade, which was meant to be a valentines gift to my beloved Aya.

The Update from the Upgrade!

With the new upgrades, S-AYA is now slightly stronger than a typical office computer. With that, we also decided to update the code as we moved the code into the newly made S-AYA+.

AYA now has TRIVIA HYPE! Basically, Aya can ask the viewers a true or false question or a short answer question. When the user gets the right answer before too many wrong responses are made, the user gets free burger points. I just felt bad for the people who watch me but couldn't challenge me on stream for points. I also removed THE ENTIRE FACT BOOK. Why!?! Because the facts sucked. I literally just copied and pasted 1000 facts from a big fact book. This time, I handpicked facts that I actually like, which are mostly facts for kids so it's fun. Some of them are about videogames too. I mean, we're all gamers right? There's a bunch of funny ones too so it won't be boring anymore. I even gave a command for anyone to use so that Aya can give a fact by command. Also, I made the code less messy for easier accessibility on the Full Edition of Aya's public build. I know it doesn't look like much but I cleared up so much crap with the code. Anyways, I'm really proud of Aya so far. I just can't wait to have more free time to improve her public build and fix all the bugs with the dating simulator.

If you want to use Aya on your stream, please do tell me. I really want to test her out with other channels and I really want her to be a useful bot for anyone to use.

Also, the computer is strong enough to run this really cool screensaver I found, where it runs multiple NES roms. You can even take over it and play it if you want. It's pretty hype!

FGC Simulator Pre-development Phase coming to an end?

Yo. This is Chair. Haven't had an update on this game in a while now huh? Well, I finally finished writing the entire gamescript, and this is only v0.8, meaning that only the super important main parts are written. I've never written 60 pages before so I'm tired haha. Can't wait to start programming this game. Story still sounds a bit cheesy but I hope we can fix that as we work on the game. It's really hard transition from only writing comedy into writing something with drama and emotions. Then again, I still don't know how to program an action RPG in Unity. I should focus more in school at this point. Progress might be slow but I won't let this one die.

Final Flames 2 Has Been Revived!

1/31/2016

Hey! Chair here! I think Final Flames 2 has finally gotten a big update since its many years of inactivity.

First of all, we would like to present a new feature that we never planned many years ago.
This new feature is the Assist. Is this the same assist feature from the first Final Flames game? Not really. It's quite different. The one in first game is actually an assistant feature. But what's the difference? The assistant feature in the first game allows you to recruit a fallen citizen to fight alongside you as an AI controlled ally until the stage has been completed. It's rather cool so this feature will soon be implemented in the game. But what is the new assist feature in Final Flames 2? If you have played some fighting games where you can summon your partner and they do a move to extend your combo, such as Marvel VS Capcom 3, then that is the assist feature we are implementing here. After selecting the character you are playing, you can select any of the other playable characters for you to summon anytime within the game for them to perform a quick move.
Picture
Also, we want to show off that we FINALLY made stage 1.
For many years, this game only had bosses. There was never any stages. If you've noticed in the GIF, the playable character seems to be able to walk faster right after all the enemies have been cleared. This is because we're implementing something from Time Crisis where the game will automatically move you to the next area of action really fast. This prevents a major flaw we had in the first game, which is spending most of your time walking REALLY slow throughout the stages (which is why I call the first game "Walking Simulator" haha). Anyways, I have high hopes for this game.

I was also able to seduce an artist to draw some stuff for this game. This girl is Danicky, and she has been spamming the guestbook with some weird stories. I'm really hyped up about this.

By the way, today is the Global Game Jam, which is an event where you go to some place and develop games for 48 hours straight but I have no ride so I just Game Jammed at home haha. Sad life.

Finally, I've decided to stream this game's development from time to time so if you are interested, you can check out the stream here.

Other small updates:
  • Faliyos's ice wave now has a longer hitstun
  • Faliyos's first punch has a longer hitstun to prevent sudden combo breakers
  • Joriel's aerial attack has the arrows more condensed
  • Joriel's command attack changed from a melee book attack into shooting arrows in the air, similar to his boss counterpart

The Start of a New Semester + Hulk Kid Update Hype

1/21/2016

Picture
Hey! This is Chair! It sucks that we all have to go back to classes, but we gotta do it if we wanna graduate and make awesomer games. Since we're back in school, it's obvious that the game development process will be slower. But this does not stop us to bring you updates!

From now on, any medium sized updates on Hulk Kid will be put on the website. This means you can actually see the changes made in the incomplete game! Experience the developmental changes of a game! You can visit the Hulk Kid page and play the basic movement functions of Hulk Kid right now on your browser. There will be no executable downloads until the game is complete.

FGC Simulator has zero updates since the previous post haha. I was actually planning on updating it during Genesis 3 but I often end up playing with really skilled Socal and Japanese players in a suite. It's obvious that I just knock out by the time I get back on my own hotel room. I really wanted to finish the game script by then but I guess it didn't happen. Before I go, why not check out my awesome crowd sign in Genesis?

A Long First Devlog Post

1/14/2016

Picture
Hello! This is Chair, vice president of Lame Dimension and a nooby Computer Science student in college. First of all, today is the day we launched the Devlog page of this website. Two days ago, we just bought the domain www.lamedimension.com. Yesterday, we also bought the domain www.lamedimension.moe. Strange isn't it? Well, we never knew that the moe domain existed until I tweeted that I got the com domain. I was told shortly after that there was a moe domain and I just regretted my choice haha.

I want to say that this devlog is where I will pretty much put every single update on what I do with development. I'm usually shy with a lot of people seeing my stuff and I do not think many people come here so I'm more comfortable blurting out everything here.

We are 10 years old now??

Picture
Before we get started on the many things to talk about development, I would like to say that Lame Dimension is actually 10 years old now. Well, it wasn't really Lame Dimension 10 years ago when we were in elementary. Mr. Prez and I just called ourselves the Stick Figure Returns team after we developed our first game, Stick Figure Returns. We decided the name Lame Dimension during middle school. The first Lame Dimension website, made in webs.com, was made a year later when we had a heavier focus in our main game, Final Flames. This website was born on the summer of 2015. I'm not really sure if Mr. Prez is aware that we've been making games for 10 years now haha.

Fighting Game Community Simulator

Picture
FGC Simulator has actually been in development since the summer of 2015. It's crazy to think that the game is still in the pre-production phase, knowing it's been about 7 months now. The crazier thing is how there are so many ideas about the game that had been changed throughout the months. If I decided to start developing the game during the first month, it would have probably been made in RPG Maker or RenPy, where it's a story-only game. The main characters would have been all boys. This is because before it was called FGC Simulator, the game would have been called Secksmen, which features four boys from a competitive fighting game team in real life called Secksmen. I said to myself, I don't want to make this game about real people. Time has passed and the characters were all changed into girls, with their personalities reflecting on the four boys. I actually finished the game script during October, but I have been heavily revising it during december. About 90% of the script was entirely changed. For example, the first boss was just going to be a generic monster shaped like a cherry with arms and legs that stops the player out of nowhere. In the revision, many aspects of Chapter 1 has been changed, as the first boss actually plays a role in the story now. It's no longer just a monster, it is now a girl named Atseri, with the nickname of Cherry. There's still no design for her but I imagine her with a cute, frilly pink dress. I have lied so many times with the people I'm collaborating with at Skrub Lyfe Gaming that I'm almost done with the script. This is because a really big Super Smash Bros. tournament that I'm attending called Genesis 3 is coming up and my teammate often comes to my place to practice intensively. I'm actually about 70% done now. I usually stay up really late just writing the story to make up the lost time. It's crazy to think that Genesis 3 is tomorrow. I'm actually writing this post before I leave for Genesis. Anyways, I'm really hype to start developing this game. There are a few problems though. The problems are:
  • I'm actually writing the entire plot before developing the game. A good game designer develops the story in detail throughout the development, not in the start.
  • I'm making a serious game at my first time using Unity. You're supposed to make smaller games to test the waters. To make matters worse, I'm still learning the basics of Unity. To alleviate this problem a bit, I'm making test games within FGC Simulator that will eventually become minigames within the game.
I really hope we can come through even with these problems. Did I also mention that I'm also going to sell this on Steam even though it will be my first Unity game? Crazy, huh? Anyways, I really just want to make a game with a serious story line for once. One of my biggest weaknesses is writing a serious plot. Whenever I try to do so, it often comes up as cheesy. I think I'm really good at writing funny stories though since many of my friends laughed at my Fate of Two Awesomes visual novel. I sort of alleviate this problem by having the main protagonist as a comic relief, meaning that there is still a bit of humor in some serious parts of the plot so that it wouldn't sound as cheesy. At this point, I don't even think this game should be called FGC Simulator since this does not feature the Fighting Game Community's activities as a whole. Rather, this game focuses on the friendship of former fighting game players. I still don't know the best title for it, so I'll leave it as FGC Simulator for now. I hope that I'm actually able to reach the hearts of people with this game though. By the way, do you know how difficult it is for me to write a serious plot? I'm not really experienced with making characters talk accurately with their personalities. Let's say there's this innocent girl. Sometimes, my silly personality would kick in and I would write what I would say instead for her dialogue when she makes responses. Just imagine an innocent little girl suddenly saying, "Yo, mang! Chill!" Strange huh? Why am I not putting this devlog post on the FGC Simulator tumblr? I intend the tumblr to be of more serious, major updates. I know it's empty but I'll put something once the game is past the pre-production phase.

Hulk Kid

Honestly, I never expected that I would be asked to be in a collaboration to make a game about a Youtube series. I found this series called, Hulk Kid, on Youtube and it made me burst out laughing because it uses the video making style I like to do, which is editing videos so bad that it's funny. In response, I decided to make a video about the series, which is on the bottom, and the creator of the series loved it. I was later asked if I could make a game for it. Problem is that he wanted me to make a flash game so that it could be played on the browser. I'm not experienced at making flash games but I soon found a solution. The solution was to make an HTML5 game through Game Maker, which is an engine I'm extemely familiar with. Right now, it's still at the pre-production phase. The game will be made in a slow way since I want to focus on FGC Simulator. Did I also mention that I'm bad at balancing school with game development? Sometimes, I wish I can just skip a semester so I can have more time to develop games.

Final Flames 2

This game has been in development for about 3 years now. Why? I really hope Mr. Prez would at least put small updates on it from time to time. I've already done the parts that I can do on my own, which is to make all the bosses and characters. I can't really work on updates until Mr. Prez updates it.  Honestly, I want to finish this game already. This game has so much potential. Even though the only thing playable are the bosses, I think this game is already more fun than the first game on its entirety. I know back then we thought that Final Flames was going to be the best game we made, but with what was implemented on Final Flames 2, the first game just feels so dull and slow. With the new combo system and jumping mechanics, the game just feels awesome. Even the bosses are more unique. Honestly, most of the bosses I made in the previous game was just copy and paste from the first boss with just a new type of attack haha.

Honestly, this little sister project will probably be something I'll work with for the rest of my life. She's just a Twitch bot now but I really want to expand her for other AI purposes one day. It's crazy to think that a character I made in a high school short story project turned out like this. I'm having her made as a live2D model. This 3D model is just a custom character I made from a hentai game hahahhaha. Aya is cute. I'm glad that many of my friends like interacting with Aya. But what makes me the happiest is when people actually think she's a real person talking haha. Happened about 5 times now on Twitch.
